Major Malfunction
From the Journal Star:
Culbert a Husker?
I love headlines that end in question marks.
Frankly, though, Major Culbert's status as a Husker remains unclear. Hence, the question mark.
No word today -- yet -- from South Stadium about his future in Lincoln. The incoming recruit -- arrested and charged in May with first-degree burlary and first-degree sexual abuse -- plea-barained Wednesday to lesser charges of trespassing and harassment.
Bob Gorham, the deputy district attorney in Lane County, Ore., told me this afternoon that Culbert was sentenced to five years probation and 25 days in jail. He can do that next summer, with options of work release, work crew and electronic monitoring. He already served five days in jail in California earlier this spring.
Gorham stressed that the two female victims of the assault wanted Culbert to be able to complete college, so they suggested the lesser charges.
Said Gorham: "That was pretty nice of them."
