Judgment Day?

I can't imagine there has ever been a time in the history of Nebraska Football when things have turned around so dramatically, so quickly and significant changes seemed so imminent, if not immediate. It would be hard to get out all of the thoughts I have without spending 2 hours organizing it and putting into a readable format, but the truth is this: we as fans are all in this position together, and regardless of any past allegiances to past regimes or the current one, we are here together. And it is us, the fans of Nebraska Football, what make this program so unique. The Athletic Director, Head Coach, etc are the stewards of the program, charged with the responsibility to maintain the traditions, honor and pride that define what being a Nebraska Cornhusker is all about. Winning is important, but I've come to realize that it is so much more than that. It is clear that the current Athletic Director and Head Coach have failed the program in their responsibilities.

First, the Athletic Director has made countless missteps over his tenure. I understand that no one is perfect, but the only way those missteps could have been forgiven is if everything would have went well with the football program. We could have succeeded despite him. Instead, every mistake since day one has now manifested itself into this absolutely horrendous body of work that now defines the Athletic Director's tenure here. People wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. It would seem to reason that he was doing what he thought was best. His mistake was that he thought he was bigger than this program. I believe this will prove to be a fatal mistake.

Second, the head coach has at times exhibited similarly disappointing behaviors that are not becoming of a head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The LJS does a good job chronicling some of these things here. I was an apologist for a long time. My thoughts were that it was more beneficial to the program, and my psyche, to be supportive. Turns out, the real flaws with the head coach were his inability to put a consistently competitive football team out on the field. The recruiting was great. This was pretty exciting given the dearth of talent in the cupboards when Frank Solich left. I think we've come to realize it's not always so much about talent as it is the preparation, confidence, pride and desire to win.

This is already longer than I was trying to be, but the fact is that this program deserves so much more than what it is getting out of its top people. Things have to change. This could be as little as a blip on the radar screen because the fan base will rally around a new regime. No question about it. When you listen to the recruits that are committing to Nebraska, a common theme among them that contributed to their decision to commit were the strong Nebraska traditions and the fan support. None of that has to do with the current Athletic Director or Head Coach.

If it isn't clear by now, my opinion is that the entire Athletic Department needs a house cleaning, top to bottom. There is no way to get over this divisive era in Nebraska Football history by doing anything less. (By the way, talk of removing the Chancellor is naive and totally laughable.)

My plan would be to fire/ask the AD to resign tomorrow and probably the Associate AD since they are connected at the hip. Then I would ask Callahan to release Cosgrove immediately or they are both gone. Assuming BC releases KC, we have a temporary scapegoat and attempt to be competitive the rest of the season with a new defensive boss. If they both go, then Sean Watson is named interim head coach, the grad assistants step into full-time status and we ride hurt the rest of the season, trying to salvage something of a recruiting class. Short term pain, long term gain.

Some form of a healing process needs to begin immediately. Does that day come tomorrow?

Dude, nice call.

So, who is your pick, Sto? Did we piss of Pelini too much to get him back? Hopefully Peterson being gone will make us an option for him.

By the way, I also got a good laugh at the talk of Harvey being under the gun. So people think the chancellor of a major research university should lose his job for having a bad football team? Really?

I definitely think Pelini would consider us, but there are going to be some other openings. I read the recent Yahoo article and I think he has a fondness for Nebraska. I think we'll want to move on a coach right after the CU game, so I hope things get going on a permanent AD or else TO makes the call to release the staff. I can already say that it would be a mistake to keep the staff beyond this season.
