Kenny Wilson, The Dump Truck

We've all heard so much talk about Kenny Wilson's run in that scrimmage and I talked him up after attending practice a week ago. So what's all the fuss about? I hope this is a sign of things to come, and I don't mean the inability of our defense to tackle. I hope this helps everyone to remove themselves from the heart-string-tugging mood in which TC has put them. When making the pilgrimage to Lincoln for this weekend, try to focus on the thought of Kenny Wilson marching through tacklers rather than the band members marching through each other. We love you and your sentimentality TC, but this, my friend, is football.

Props to you, Graham, for giving me the heads-up to post this clip.

Welcome to HUSKER FOOTBALL 2006!

In just 3 days time, we will all be back in Lincoln, cracking a beer before the bedtime sand is gone from our eyes, wearing scarlet and cream, soaking in the gameday atmosphere which we've all come to know and love. As we make our way from the No Option tailgate, through the sea of red humanity we will hark back to the old glory days when real thoughts of Big 12 and National championships danced through our heads despite having Frank Solich as coach. Finally, we will reach our usual seats in South Stadium-section 14, just in time to hear the Pride of all Nebraska regale us with our favorite pregame tunes (such as Mr. Touchdown USA) and we will all chant the letters of Nebraska before singing along to Nebraska's own Hail Varsity. As the excitement reaches a boiling point, our bodies will experience a sensory overload as the strains of Alan Parson's "Sirius" ring over the ole' stadium and the 2006 Tunnel Walk light up our eyes thanks to the new HuskerVision mega-jumbotron. The opponent's helmet will destroyed in some creative fashion and the 2006 Cornhuskers will slowly make their way from the locker room. Just when the noise and excitement reaches alarming levels, the entire stadium will explode as the Huskers race onto Tom Osborne Field. The Huskers will crush another inferior opponent, the crowd will applaud as both teams leave the field and for at least one more week, everything in the world will be right again.

See ya there...

Paying our respects

As we head into the 2006 season, it will be a sad sight to see a new head football coach on the sidelines for the University of Colorado. For years, Gary Barnett (and Rick Neuheisel (ladies and gentleman)) provided many memorable moments for Husker fans. From blowing games late in the 4th quarter to ripping off headsets to blowing games late in the 4th quarter to demeaning women to blowing games late in the 4th quarter to having a team full of rapists to blowing games late in the 4th quarter, there was never a dull moment at CU. With Dan Hawkins at the helm, they will just be a bad football team without story lines.

Thanks for the memories G. Especially this last one.

Welcome to the family Sam

According to a number of sources, former Arizona State QB Sam Keller will join the Huskers. After sitting out 2006, he will have 1 year left of eligibility. This isn't official yet, but it's supposed to be announced on Thursday.

This is a very odd situation. As currently as last Friday, some 4 days ago, he was announced as ASU's starting quarterback. Then on Saturday, the ASU head coach said he made a mistake and named their sophmore Rudy Carpenter the starter. This obviously shocked Keller who excused himself from practice to "evaluate his options." Sources point to him transferring to NU.

My first question is this...why does he want to waste a critical year in his football career, playing scout QB for the Huskers, in order to have 1 shot at playing QB for Nebraska for 1 year, all the while risking the exact same situation coming up in 2007, (with someone like Ganz, Hildebrand, or the kid from Texas beating him for the starting job)? The best case scenerio for him would be to win the job in '07, do well for a team that still probably is not a National Championship caliber team, and go in the 3rd or 4th round of the '08 draft. And what if he doesn't start for us in '07? Now he's looking at not even getting drafted.

Why doesn't he just stay at ASU? Sure he'll be the backup, but the moment Carpenter messes up, or suffers a crowbar to the knee-cap, Keller's right back in there. He finishes out his senior season, racking up yards, throwing against Pac-10 defenses, and possibly goes as high as the 1st or 2nd round in the '07 draft depending on how good his pre-draft workouts were.

I don't like this one bit. If this trend keeps up, we're not going to be able to bring in any blue-chip QB recruits because we keep stuffing our depth chart with JUCO's and journeymen.

Husker Practice 8/20/06

Well, I decided to attend the practice tonight that was open to students and decided to post a few observations. Most of the part of practice that we were able to observe was a semi-scrimmage. They ran plays offense vs. defense, but there was no tackling allowed, quarterbacks or otherwise. So, I realize that these observations may be a little distorted because they weren't exactly game-like conditions, but take them for what they are worth.

First the quarterbacks. ZTay and almost all of his passes looked good. One totally ill-advised pass that was picked off and another that probably should have been. For the most part I was satisfied. Ganz looked quite good, actually, no big mistakes, his arm looked good, but with fewer reps that Taylor. I'm pretty happy with him as the backup for now. Beau Davis on the otherhand probably has no business at a division I school, based on this practice. I read the article he had in the paper a week ago like everyone else and was a bit optimistic, but all of it was rubbish as far as I could tell. He didn't throw any picks, but that was because he was busy throwing the ball out of bounds over his receivers' heads. I didn't see every throw he made today, but out of the few I did see, not one was good.

Running backs: I think we are in good hands. From what I saw tonight I would probably be comfortable with any of the big four lining up behind Taylor. I honestly don't know how they are going to choose who gets the nod here, but I imagine that it won't matter because they will probably all see reps. My chart, based on tonights performances would look like this: Wilson, Lucky, Glenn, Jackson. Bottom line, Wilson is the most explosive. Simply more acceleration and more speed. Lucky also looked impressive, but doesn't have quite the acceleration. Glenn is right on Lucky's heels, he will probably have a similar role to last year, only with more carries. I don't know what to think about Jackson. He looked quicker and faster than Lucky and Glenn to my suprise, only he lacks the size. I'm not doubting he could play a big role. I'm really not taking into account blocking skills because I was observing Taylor and his receivers at the time. I'm glad I don't have to be the one to decide, but like I said, we probably can't go wrong with any of the four.

I didn't see any dropped passes by receivers, which is a good sign. One of the backs dropped one in the flat that Beau Davis drilled off of his hands at about 70 mph, but that was all that I noticed. Herrian looked good with a couple of catches in the endzone with the ball set up in the red zone. The receiver that I thought stood out was Peterson. Man, he's tall.

The bad news: The secondary got absolutely torched. I'm hoping that is a result of an improved passing offense and the fact that they weren't allowed to tackle. I'm not sure how much the permission to tackle would have affected all of the open receivers streaking down the field, but I'm hoping it would have been a lot. Also, all the starters weren't playing every play.

The three captains came and said a few words to the students, but their speeches were short, uninspiring and, quite frankly, all the same. Zach even said, "We are going to be ready for Louisiana Tech on September 30." Prompting all of the players and students to correct him in unison. Ouch.

The stadium updates are great. Again, the screen is simply incredible. I can't describe my anticipation for the tunnel walk in two weeks. Speaking of which, we got a preview of the new video. I won't say what it included, but it wasn't bad and it wasn't great. After they showed it on the new screen, they filed the students through the route that the players usually take. At the outside of the tunnel the players were in two lines which the students walked through and gave out high-fives. I didn't partake.

Nebraska to start season ranked nos. 20/22

(I'm a big AP poll guy. Why should I concern myself with what football secretaries think? That is unless NU is ranked higher in the 'coaches' poll.)

So the AP poll came out today with Nebraska two notches higher than the Coaches Poll. This is the first time since 2002 that NU is ranked in the pre-season polls. Four years.

None of this means anything, of course, other than that even if NU goes undefeated it will not have a chance to play in the national title game. Not that we have to worry about that anyways.

Overall I am not surprised by anything in the polls, other than by the fact that Colorado received one 25th place vote in the coaches poll. Apparently Dan Hawkins is already working his magic. Big 12 North: Beware.

Lastly, I read my first and last Jason Whitlock article of the season: his AP ballot on espn.com's page 2. What are the qualifications to be an AP voter? Fatlock voted West Virginia #1, said the Big 12 stinks, called '05 Penn State a fluke and did not vote for Nebraska.

15 days 'til the opener.

Invitation From the Man Himself

I received this e-mail from BC this morning.

I won't tell you my thoughts on it, only ask you to respond.

Dear NU student:

On behalf of the 2006 Nebraska football team, I would like to invite you to
come to Memorial Stadium this Sunday August 20 to watch us practice. Gate 24
will be open at 4:15 p.m. and you can get in for free by showing your student
ID card. We also will have an added bonus for you. As you are walking in, we

will have the new screens up and running. The new screens have been on while
we've been practicing and believe me, you don't want to miss an opportunity to

see them. As you walk in, grab a Pepsi product and sit down and enjoy an
inside look at the 2006 Huskers. After practice concludes, the newly elected
captains and I will come over and talk to you and practice our school song,
which we sing after every victory.

After singing the school song, you will get to be a part of something really
special to us. You will be able to run out of the tunnel and onto the field to

the tunnel walk music. Following the tunnel walk, you can exit the stadium and

head on over to Big Red Welcome.

The entire team is looking forward to the upcoming year and we want you all to

know that the energy you bring every football Saturday is an integral part of
our success. The players are focused and are getting after it in practice. We

can't wait to come out and play for you in a couple of weeks. I hope to see
you on Sunday.

Go Big Red!

A Faster Tempo, and No not that shitty mid 80's to 90s Ford car

Apparently the Practice tempo has really picked up this year compared to last year. I want to say this is a positive sign that maybe we will be a quicker better prepared team come this fall. Last year's team took awhile(the Colorado game) to get warmed up.

Tight Ends,
What is this I hear about tight end being a loaded position? Uhhh I'm calling bullshit, a 3 yard out and fall down on one's ass is not a loaded position, unless loaded refers to the lead in their ass.

K-State once again loses a player, this time a sophomore TE who was 22nd nationally last year as a recruit. The story goes he couldn't practice because he didn't pass the physical fitness test of 3 shuttle runs. He passed the first 2 but not the third . . . The reason he leaves though, HE CLAIMS, is because other players didn't make their designated times yet were allowed to play . . . Is he playing favorites again? Yikes, apparently he's trying to break the nepotism record held by the old Rumanian dictator Nikolai Ceausescu, i didn't think he could do it, but at this rate his future sons will be the OC, DC, and Starting QB in less than 5 years.

Mass Exodus Big 12 Style

Two more players are outta here. First off Leon Jackson is reportedly leaving for good this time. I guess he wasn't happy with the wealth of talent we have in store for this fall. Later Bitch.

The other player isn't a Husker thank god, but he is a Nebraskan originally. Allan Everidge, 6 game starter a year ago, and freshmen passing yardage record holder at K-state has decided to leave the team. KSU originally had 5 QB's competing in the spring, but with the departure of webb, everidge and some other no name it's down to 2. Senior QB Meier and Freshmen Bitch Freeman are the only one's left. It looks like ole ron prince made a deal reminiscent of Mack Brown Chris simms, "come here and you'll start I promise." I love it, because A) it never works out for the best and B) without competition your QB doesn't improve. Thank you Ron Prince for selling out in less than 6 months on the job.

Shocked

That's really the only thing I have to say in reaction to Harrison Beck's decision to leave the program. This came completely out of left field. Who could have known? Things must have quickly turned south for a true sophomore to make the life changing decision to leave the program after only 2 days of fall practice. Assuming that things were generally headed in the right direction after his freshman year, what could have possibly transpired through 2 days of fall practice to veer this thing so terribly off course? Sure, fourth on the depth chart is not where anyone wants to be, but is that enough of a reason to pack up and leave? Certainly he would not have headed into the season as the fourth quarterback. I'm not going to rip Beck without hearing the full story, and I have to say that something just doesn't sound right with all of this.

As far as the program goes, this is not a good reputation for NU to be building, now with the 3 most recent 'star' QB recruits leaving Lincoln without even having reached their junior seasons. This makes the Josh Freeman de-committment hurt that much more. We are now in a very precarious spot with regards to the quarterback position.

The good thing is that Harrison Beck was probably not going to see a lot of playing time this year, without an injury to Zach Taylor, which begs the question: how f'ed are we if Z-Tay goes down? Joe Ganz is Joe Ganz. He's no Beck.

The other good thing is that we couldn't have had a worse first week of fall practice, having lost Zach Bowman for the year to an ACL tear and Beck from the program. Things have to get better. Right?

My enthusiasm regarding both the 2006 season and the general direction of this program is in freefall.

As my good friend C-Mustard would say:

Harrison Beck Missing

Harrison Beck failed to show up for practice on Saturday.

Apparently he was pissed that they had listed him at #4 on the depth chart. His mother did not know his whereabouts but did have an upsetting conversation with him on Friday. He sent her a text message today saying that he was okay and not to worry about him.

This really sucks on every level. Beck is supposed to be the guy who takes over for Zac Taylor after this year without skipping a beat. Now we know that the future leader of our team is another crybaby (cough...crouch...cough) who can't hack it when a little adversity and challenge gets put in front of him. Does he not know that Joe Ganz is a pretty good QB who's been playing very well in practice for the last year? Does he not realize that being injured this spring put him behind the 8-ball somewhat leading into preseason camp? Does he not know that his career stats are 1-10 with an interception and that the #2 spot isn't just reserved for him, not to mention the starting job next year?

I say screw Beck. Start giving Ganz as many reps as Taylor and let's move on.

FireMarkMay

I recently stumbled upon FireMarkMay, a site which is dedicated to ripping on one of the worst displays of college football television since the disaster that was "Big PlayStation Saturday" on TBS, featuring Ernie Johnson and Brian Bosworth. Yeah.

Anyways, I loved the concept and 'Trev Alberts' would be a great contributor, but the content is definitely on the weak side. Not the least of which included a line mentioning both Phil Fulmer and strip poker in the same sentence. Geez. Now sure, Phil Fulmer has tits that would make Chuck Amato and Mark Mangino jealous, but that is just wrong. Quick aside - Has anyone ever thought about how bad those guys could clean out a buffet table?

As we head into the season, the only depressing thing to me (besides the possibility of a 3rd straight loss in Ames, all live and in-person) is some of the absolutely dreadful announcers and analysts we will have to suffer through, namely Mark May, Jim Rose, Brent "open-container" Musburger, Gary Danielson, Artie "built in rack and pinion steering, jackhammer feet" Gigantino and Pam "ESPN2 shitty Big 10 game of the week, but we still have to show it to you" Ward.

Sometimes its about bad enough to make you want to listen to Jerry Punch...

30-ft Tall Zac Taylor

I was walking back to Nebraska Hall from the union today and happened across a 30-ft tall Zac Taylor. I was watching highlights from last years games on the new gigantic screen on North Stadium, which they are now testing. I don't want to hype it too much, but it is frickin' ridiculously huge. The right side of the screen, about a quarter or more of the total width of the screen (about 10 of the 40 yards) was devoted to what a scoreboard would usually contain, while the rest was a massive video feed. You can now comfortably watch an entire game from the grassy knoll behind Kauffman, probably farther, with not much more than the very bottom of the screen being cut off from view by the top of East Stadium.

The excitement for LA Tech is reaching alarming levels. I expect all of the Displaced Huskers to be there.

Rhett Bomar kicked off team

This really opens things up for the South. In my mind, Texas and Oklahoma are now in a dead heat, if that. Oklahoma's defense will be good enough to carry through the year, but Paul Thompson just got a huge punch in the gut as he wakes up tomorrow as the quarterback for OU. I now see OU having a similar year to last years. Teams can now sell out to stop Adrian Peterson. Bomar had developed enough throughout last year for team's to have to respect his arm somewhat. Not anymore. Good luck Sooners, I guess it'll be a good ole fashioned UT-NU showdown in KC.
